Sheppard described how Roof requested if he had shot her then spared her life intentionally when she stated no.
The authorized circumstances surrounding Roof's case are uncommon. Whereas he confessed to the killings to police and has by no means denied them, he entered a not responsible plea.
This was all the way down to prosecutors' request that he be sentenced to loss of life. They'd not take away the loss of life penalty clause from plea offers.
David Bruck, Roof's legal professional, stated he would have entered a responsible plea had life imprisonment been supplied.
Roof allowed Bruck to symbolize him on the guilt and innocence stage of the trial however requested to function his personal illustration within the trial's sentencing section.
He wrote to Choose Richard Gergel to make the request. It is not recognized what his motives are.

IN FULL: TEXT OF RACIST MANIFESTO
I used to be not raised in a racist dwelling or surroundings. Residing within the South, virtually each White particular person has a small quantity of racial consciousness, merely beause [sic] of the numbers of negroes on this a part of the nation.
However it's a superficial consciousness. Rising up, in class, the White and black children would make racial jokes towards one another, however all they have been have been jokes.
Me and White pals would typically would watch issues that might make us suppose that 'blacks have been the actual racists' and different elementary ideas like this, however there was no actual understanding behind it.
The occasion that really woke up me was the Trayvon Martin case. I saved listening to and seeing his identify, and finally I made a decision to look him up.
I learn the Wikipedia article and straight away I used to be unable to know what the massive deal was. It was apparent that Zimmerman was in the fitting.
However extra importantly this prompted me to sort within the phrases 'black on White crime' into Google, and I've by no means been the identical since that day.
The primary web site I got here to was the Council of Conservative Residents. There have been pages upon pages of those brutal black on White murders. I used to be in disbelief.
At this second I spotted that one thing was very fallacious. How might the information be blowing up the Trayvon Martin case whereas tons of of those black on White murders received ignored?
From this level I researched deeper and discovered what was taking place in Europe. I noticed that the identical issues have been taking place in England and France, and in all the opposite Western European international locations.
Once more I discovered myself in disbelief. As an American we're taught to simply accept residing within the melting pot, and black and different minorities have simply as a lot proper to be right here as we do, since we're all immigrants.
However Europe is the homeland of White individuals, and in some ways the scenario is even worse there. From right here I discovered concerning the Jewish drawback and different points going through our race, and I can say right now that I'm fully racially conscious.
Blacks
I believe it's is becoming to begin off with the group I've essentially the most actual life expertise with, and the group that's the greatest drawback for People.
N****rs are silly and violent. On the identical time they've the capability to be very slick. Black individuals view all the things by means of a racial lense [sic].
Thats [sic] what racial consciousness is, its viewing all the things that occurs by means of a racial lense [sic].
They're all the time excited about the truth that they're black. That is a part of the rationale they get offended so simply, and suppose that some factor [sic] are meant to be racist in direction of them, even when a White particular person wouldnt [sic] be excited about race. The opposite motive is the Jewish agitation of the black race.
Black persons are racially conscious virtually from delivery, however White individuals on common dont [sic] take into consideration race of their every day lives. And that is our drawback. We have to and must.
Say you have been to witness a canine being beat by a person. You might be virtually absolutely going to really feel very sorry for that canine. However then say you have been to witness a canine biting a person. You'll most definitely not really feel the identical pity you felt for the canine for the person. Why? As a result of canines are decrease than males.
This identical analogy applies to black and White relations. Even right now, blacks are subconsciously considered by White persons are [sic] decrease beings. They're held to a decrease commonplace on the whole. Because of this they're able to get away with issues like obnoxious conduct in public. As a result of it's anticipated of them.
Fashionable historical past courses instill a unconscious White superiority complicated in Whites and an inferiority complicated in blacks. This White superiority complicated that comes from studying of how we dominated different peoples can also be a part of the issue I've simply talked about. However after all I dont [sic] deny that we're the truth is superior.
I want with a ardour that n****rs have been handled terribly all through historical past by Whites, that each White particular person had an ancestor who owned slaves, that segregation was an evil an [sic] oppressive establishment, and so forth.
As a result of if it was all it true, it might make it a lot simpler for me to simply accept our present scenario.
But it surely isnt true. None of it's. We're advised to simply accept what is occurring to us due to ancestors fallacious doing [sic], however it's all primarily based on historic lies, exaggerations and myths. I've tried endlessly to think about causes we deserve this, and I've solely got here again extra irritated as a result of there aren't any causes.
Solely a fourth to a 3rd of individuals within the South owned even one slave. But each White particular person is handled as if that they had a slave proudly owning ancestor. This is applicable to within the states the place slavery by no means existed, in addition to individuals whose households immigrated after slavery was abolished.
I've learn tons of of slaves narratives from my state. And virtually all of them have been optimistic.
One stands proud in my thoughts the place an previous ex-slave recounted how the day his mistress died was one of many saddest days of his life. And in lots of of those narratives the slaves advised of how their masters didnt [sic] even permitting whipping on his plantation.
Segregation was not a foul factor. It was a defensive measure. Segregation didn't exist to carry again negroes. It existed to guard us from them. And I imply that in a number of methods.
Not solely did it shield us from having to work together with them, and from being bodily harmed by them, but it surely protected us from being introduced all the way down to their stage. Integration has executed nothing however convey Whites all the way down to stage of brute animals. One of the best instance of that is clearly our college system.
Now White dad and mom are compelled to maneuver to the suburbs to ship their youngsters to 'good colleges'. However what constitutes a 'good faculty'? The actual fact is that how good a college is taken into account straight corresponds to how White it's.
I hate with a ardour the entire thought of the suburbs. To me it represents nothing however scared White individuals operating. Working as a result of they're too weak, scared, and brainwashed to struggle.
Why ought to we now have to flee the cities we created for the safety of the suburbs? Why are the suburbs safe within the first place? As a result of they're White.
The pathetic half is that these White individuals dont [sic] even admit to themselves why they're transferring. They inform themselves it's for higher colleges or just to stay in a nicer neighborhood. However it's actually only a strategy to escape n****rs and different minorities.
However what concerning the White individuals which are left behind? What concerning the White youngsters who, due to faculty zoning legal guidelines, are compelled to go to a faculty that's 90 per cent black?
Do we actually suppose that that White child will be capable of go someday with out being picked on for being White, or referred to as a 'white boy'? And who's combating for him? Who's combating for these White individuals compelled by financial circumstances to stay amongst negroes? Nobody, however somebody has to.
Right here I might additionally like to the touch on the thought of a Norhtwest [sic] Entrance. I believe this concept is past silly.
Why ought to I for instance, hand over the wonder and historical past of my state to go to the Norhthwest [sic]? To me the entire thought simply parralells [sic] the idea of White individuals operating to the suburbs. The entire thought is pathetic and simply one other strategy to run from the issue with out going through it.
Some individuals really feel as if the South is past saving, that we now have too many blacks right here. To this I say take a look at historical past. The South had a better ratio of blacks once we have been holding them as slaves.
Have a look at South Africa, and the way such a small minority held the black in apartheid for years and years. Talking of South Africa, if anybody thinks that suppose will finally simply change for the higher, take into account how in South Africa they've affirmative motion for the black inhabitants that makes up 80 per cent of the inhabitants.
It's removed from being too late for America or Europe. I imagine that even when we made up solely 30 % of the inhabitants we might take it again fully. However on no account ought to we wait any longer to take drastic motion.
Anybody who thinks that White and black individuals look as completely different as we do on the surface, however are someway magically the identical on the within, is delusional. How might our faces, pores and skin, hair, and physique construction all be completely different, however our brains be precisely the identical? That is the nonsense we're led to imagine.
Negroes have decrease Iqs [sic], decrease impulse management, and better testosterone ranges in generals. These three issues alone are a recipe for violent conduct.
If a scientist publishes a paper on the variations between the races in Western Europe or People, he can anticipate to lose his job. There are character traits inside human households, and inside completely different breeds of cats or canines, so why not inside the races?
A horse and a donkey can breed and make a mule, however they're nonetheless two fully completely different animals. Simply because we will breed with the opposite races doesnt make us the identical.
In a contemporary historical past class it's all the time emphasised that, when speaking about 'dangerous' issues Whites have executed in historical past, they have been White.
However once we lern [sic] concerning the quite a few, virtually numerous fantastic issues Whites have executed, it's by no means identified that these individuals have been White.
But once we find out about something necessary executed by a black particular person in historical past, it's all the time identified repeatedly that they have been black. For instance once we find out about how George Washington carver [sic] was the primary n****r sensible sufficient to open a peanut.
On one other topic I wish to say this. Many White individuals really feel as if they dont [sic] have a novel tradition. The explanation for that is that White tradition is world tradition.
I dont [sic] imply that our tradition is made up of different cultures, I imply that our tradition has been adopted by everybody on this planet. This makes us really feel as if our tradition isnt particular or distinctive.
Say for instance that each enterprise man on this planet wore a kimono, that each skyscraper was within the form of a pagoda, that each door was a sliding one, and that everybody ate each meal with chopsticks. This is able to in all probability make a Japanese man really feel as if he had no distinctive conventional tradition.
I've observed an amazing disdain for race mixing White ladies inside the White nationalists neighborhood, bordering on madness it. These ladies are victims, and they are often saved. Cease.
Jews
Not like many White naitonalists [sic], I'm of the opinion that almost all of American and European Jews are White.
For my part the problems with Jews is just not their blood, however their identification. I believe that if we might someway destroy the Jewish identification, then they wouldnt [sic] trigger a lot of an issue.
The issue is that Jews look White, and in lots of instances are White, but they see themselves as minorities.
Identical to n****rs, most Jews [sic] are all the time excited about the truth that they're Jewish. The opposite concern is that they community. If we might someway flip each Jew blue for 24 hours, I believe there could be a mass awakening, as a result of individuals would be capable of see plainly what's going on.
I dont [sic] fake to know why Jews do what they do. They're enigma [sic].
Hispanics
Hispanics are clearly an enormous drawback for People. However there are good Hispanics and dangerous Hispanics.
I bear in mind whereas watching Hispanic tv stations, the exhibits and even the commercials have been extra White than our personal.
They've respect for White magnificence, and a superb portion of Hispanics are White. It's a well-known indisputable fact that White Hispanics make up the elite of most Hispanics [sic] international locations. There's good White blood worht [sic] saving in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and even Brasil [sic].
However they're nonetheless our enemies.
East Asians
I've nice respent for the East Asian races. Even when we have been to go extinct they might carry one thing on.
They're by nature very racist and might be nice allies of the White race. I'm not opposed in any respect to allies with the Northeast Asian races.
Patriotism
I hate the sight of the American flag. Fashionable American patriotism is an absolute joke. Individuals pretending like they've one thing to be proud [of] whereas White persons are being murdered every day within the streets.
Many veterans imagine we owe them one thing for 'defending our lifestyle' or 'defending our freedom'. However im [sic] unsure what lifestyle they're speaking about. How about we shield the White race and cease combating for the Jews.
I'll say this although, I actually would have relatively lived in 1940's American than Nazi Germany, and no this isn't ignorance talking, it's simply my opinion. So I dont [sic] blame the veterans of any wars up till after Vietnam, as a result of not less than that they had an American [sic] to be happy with and struggle for.
An Clarification
To take a saying from a movie: 'I see all these items occurring, and I dont [sic] see anybody doing something about it. And it pisses me off'. To take a saying from my favourite movie: 'Even when my life is value lower than a speck of dust, I wish to use it for the nice of society.'
I've no alternative. I'm not within the place to, alone, go into the ghetto and struggle.
I selected Charleston as a result of it's most historic metropolis in my state, and at one time had the best ratio of blacks to Whites within the nation.
We now have no skinheads, no actual KKK, nobody doing something however speaking on the web. Nicely somebody has to have the bravery to take it to the actual world, and I suppose that needs to be me.
Sadly on the time of writing I'm in an amazing hurry and a few of my greatest ideas, really a lot of them have been to be ignored and misplaced endlessly. However I imagine sufficient nice White minds are on the market already.
Please forgive any typos, I didnt [sic] have time to test it.
