In Photos: WWII-Era Shipwrecks Illegally Plundered in Java Sea

In early 1942, HMS Exeter and different Allied warships had been assigned to defend the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) from invasion by Japanese forces.

The Exeter was badly broken by shell fireplace from the Japanese cruiser Haguro within the first Battle of the Java Sea on Feb. 27, 1942, however it survived to combat within the Second Battle of the Java Sea a couple of days later, on March 1, 1942, when it sank after being hit by Japanese torpedoes.

The Exeter was virtually intact when the wreck was rediscovered in 2007, however now it has been virtually fully scavenged for scrap steel, in line with the expedition report.
