A big metallic asteroid might be the molten core of a planet the scale of Mars, scientists say.
Asteroid 16 Psyche, which orbits the solar between Mars and Jupiter, is believed to be the remnants of a protoplanet destroyed by 'violent hit-and-run collisions' when the photo voltaic system was forming.
NASA is contemplating sending a probe to the most important metallic asteroid within the photo voltaic system, in a mission that may see scientists discover a world made from steel for the primary time.

It's hoped that Psyche will reveal extra about how the Earth's iron-nickel core and the core of different planets had been fashioned.
Linda Elkins-Tanton, director of the College of Earth and Area Exploration on the Arizona State College, informed The Occasions: 'If Psyche has a magnetic area then it was the molten core of a little bit planet that was stripped of its rocky exterior.
'It is authentic physique may need been as small as Vesta, or as massive as Mars.'
Vesta is the second-largest asteroid within the photo voltaic system, with a diameter of 326 miles.
Psyche, in the meantime, is about 150 miles in diameter and made nearly totally of nickel and iron.
The asteroid is more likely to be the one planetary core that scientists will be capable to look at straight.

The proposed $500million mission, at present underneath evaluation by NASA, would launch in November 2020 and arrive on the asteroid in 2026.
Talking beforehand concerning the mission, Elkins-Tanton stated: 'Each world explored up to now has a floor of ice, rock or gasoline. Now think about a world made from iron and nickel. How alien it have to be!
'However deep beneath Earth's floor, unreachable to us, is a steel core resembling asteroid Psyche.
'A mission to this steel world could be the equal to a mission deep beneath the floor of any of the terrestrial planets to look at their cores.'
Final month, scientists revealed that they'd found attainable proof for water on the floor of Psyche.
